The 5G Workforce: Connect, Communicate, Collaborate

August 17, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 9:00 am

“While every era is a drama of many actors, each generation follows its own script.”
Strauss & Howe

Welcome to the four soon to be five generation workplace where generation ‘gaps’ emerge daily. Not a new phenomenon; but in our fast paced, fiercely competitive, 24/7 workplace change is so rapid that the disparities seem more pronounced, making it harder for employees of various ages to connect let alone communicate. Each generation carries unique preferences, attitudes and perceptions – understanding and serving those differences can give you a strong business advantage.

Meet the five generation workforce:

  • the more formal Silents (1933 – 1945)
  • the relationship and values oriented Boomers (1946 – 1964)
  • the savvy yet skeptical Gen Xer’s (1965 – 1979)
  • the fast, efficient and techy Millennials (1980 – 1999)
  • the Next Gen (>2000)

Today’s workforce is a very different workforce than in the past. If you are working today, you are part of the four, soon to be five generations working side by side. You probably notice subtle differences – in work ethic, communication styles, career outlook, expectations of bosses, retention factors, or what keeps people engaged in their work. And while this generational mix has potential for conflict and misunderstanding and even resentment — there are huge opportunities for productivity, creativity, knowledge sharing and strategic advantage.

The demands of a changing workforce and workplace bring us new challenges daily. Leaders need hard hitting information about the workforce and what they must do to remain relevant and thrive in the multi-generational game of recruiting, onboarding, coaching, engaging and retaining four, soon to be five generations.

The bottom line is competitive advantage through engaged employees. As the massive Boomer generation exits the workforce, competitive advantage will become even more tied to the ability to understand and capitalize on what motivates employees and make that work for your business. Millennials are less afraid of failure and driven less by financial incentives, so if you aren’t able to meet their needs, they’ll find an employer that will. This, coupled with the challenges of implementing successful succession plans for retiring senior employees, will significantly impact your business’ strategy for growth.

The workforce has changed and we need new understanding and actions to succeed. Leading the 5G Workforce focuses on what every leader can do to create productive, energizing workplaces.

We will view talent through a generational lens examining the “touch points” – the places where leaders and team members connect (or clash) in every phase of the work:

  • Attracting and retaining talent
  • On-boarding with ease and “gluing” new hires to your team
  • Boosting productivity and work satisfaction
  • Improving communication and reducing conflict
  • Maximizing contribution and sharing knowledge

This highly interactive session is designed to help leaders get in the game and be productive. It provides specific skills and tools, actions, and practical tips for easy implementation.
