Knowledge Transfer: Creating a Culture of Teaching and Learning

June 10, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Knowledge Transfer
At the heart of knowledge transfer is a culture of teaching and learning. Organizations have long recognized that the knowledge and experience of employees constitutes a valuable intangible asset. There are many work situations that call for teaching and learning – sharing best practices and tips; informal mentoring, getting new hires up the learning curve are all examples. Savvy leaders know that when they create a learning climate in their organizations, everyone feels welcome to share their expertise and their knowledge; and when knowledge is shared the entire organization benefits.

Why Knowledge Transfer?

  • The “brain drain” is real and our organizations are in danger of losing expertise. Retirement of the Baby Boomer generation will see mission critical, institutional knowledge walk out the door.
  • Organizations have a limited number of internal experts. And potentially a limited number of external experts (knowledge and skills gap).
  • Much of what is known is informal, undocumented, or exists in an expert’s head.
  • The learning curve for organizational expertise is often significant.

Knowledge Transfer Webinar Series
The purpose of the three part Knowledge Transfer Webinar Series is to move beyond the theory of knowledge transfer, to build momentum and excitement with activities, actions and how tos. And to then take a deeper dive into how knowledge is transferred or taught, offer specific teaching methods, share insights into selecting teachers (experts) and learners, and finally offer tips to avoid typical knowledge transfer pitfalls. The learning design allows for and encourages participant questions, ideas and suggestions.

Learning Outcomes

  • After completing the series participants will know how to:
  • Encourage informal and formal knowledge sharing
  • Identify critical at-risk knowledge and expertise
  • Identify the three step Knowledge Transfer Action Plan
  • Generate recognition, reward and celebration for knowledge transfer efforts
  • Know how to get knowledge transfer initiatives started and on track
  • Identify potential pitfalls and how to avoid them.
