Coaching for Performance Excellence

August 25, 2016 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Most first-line managers face a role dilemma – they perform as an active, working contributor who is accountable for delivering on key tasks and they perform as a leader and coach of others. Many managers are “super-doers” – experienced, highly skilled employees who have been asked to manage a group as much because of their valued technical knowledge as their leadership abilities. While both roles – that of working manager and that of leading others – are critical, the skill sets for each role are quite different. The result is tension and frustration for managers and employees alike.
The majority of managers have good intentions for coaching their direct reports, yet fewer find the bandwidth. In today’s work environment, it’s harder than ever for managers to find the time to support employee performance and development. The hard truth is that the day-to-day pace of business leaves most managers with little time and energy for developing the people who report to them.
The purpose of this reality-based, highly interactive experience is to build on the natural abilities of each manager and supervisor by providing practical skills and tools that result in the confidence and competence to coach direct reports. The session focuses on easy-to-implement skills and tools to support managers as performance and development coaches.

Key topics:

  • Coaching: What it is and isn’t.
  • Potential and Performance: Who to coach and why.
  • Coaching Conversations: how to coach
  • Development: actions that get results
  • Tougher Stuff: coaching for change
  • Recognizing Good Work: what every manager can do.
